Visualization training - Experiencing your boundless mind

You are about to go on a journey that will take you to the outer limits of your mind! Don't worry though, no psychedelics are required and I promise to return you safely.

As creative human beings we love to explore the world around us. Right now we are going to explore the world within us. This visualization exercise aims to make you aware of the boundless nature of your mind.


I find it fascinating that our minds can take us far beyond the limits of our day-to-day experience. While you engage your imagination in this exercise, think about how extraordinary it is to have the ability to conceptualize in this way. Follow along with these steps to see how far we can take this ability:

We will begin by visualizing different objects from a huge range of scale - from the extremely small to the incredibly large.

1) To play sports we use a variety of balls with different shapes and sizes.

Think about the size of a basketball or soccer ball. They are roughly the same size, but feel different in texture and the way they move. Imagine kicking the soccer ball or dribbling the basketball for a moment.

Now think of something smaller such as a golf ball or a tennis ball. Each of these has a unique texture. If you held it in your hand it would be instantly recognizable. Take a moment and imagine the way the texture would feel against your skin.

2) Now that you have warmed up your visual imagination a bit, we are going to take a big leap down in scale.

Imagine for a moment that you are walking on the beach. Can you feel the sand on your feet? Reach down and grab a handful of sand. You can probably feel the weight and rough texture against your skin. Let all of the sand flow through your fingers until there is only one grain left. Hold the grain of sand between your fingers. Notice that you can still feel the pressure on your fingers from the single grain of sand.

It's probably pretty easy to imagine a single grain of sand. Do you think you can go any smaller though? Let's try. The picture below is a community of bacteria growing on a single grain of sand. It is pictured here at a size of 5 micrometres.

Without the aid of this picture it's difficult to imagine objects on this scale. We're not used to picturing things of this size because we can't perceive them without the use of an instrument.

Although we cannot see these objects unaided, we can still process thoughts about them. If we have a visual aid to help us, then we can use mental imagery. Otherwise these objects can only be thought of as a vague concept. So how can you make a concept more detailed and precise? In the case of objects that are smaller than the eye can see, we can use a mathematical representation to better understand them. The same can be said for objects that are much larger, beyond the scope of our normal experience.

The image below is fun to think about. I love to imagine our every day experience compared to the massive scale of galactic objects.

Wow! To imagine our place in the universe is quite a humbling experience. It's also quite awe inspiring to imagine that there is so much beyond our normal range of perceptions. I the most interesting part of this exercise is experiencing the seemingly limitless nature of our minds.
